August 2024 – Volunteer With FIG

• Sept. 1 – Ellen will be a volunteer usher at the Alley Theatre for the performance of Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None.” Ushering is a great way to contribute to the vibrant cultural scene in our community, plus you get to see the show for free.

• Sept. 11 – Sarah will be sorting groceries at the HIM Food Pantry in the Heights. 100% funded by donations and 100% volunteer run, this is an amazing organization that serves over 186 families each week.

• Sept. 28 – Michael will be cleaning up the coastline with the Texas Adopt-A-Beach program. We’ve worked with this organization before and they provide everything you’ll need to ensure a great day at the beach.

Here’s What I Think Is Worth Reading:

• Have you guys heard of Y’all Street? Don’t love the name but Dallas is making a serious move to become America’s top financial hub.
• Buffalo Bayou Partnership is at it again. They recently unveiled plans to extend Buffalo Bayou Park into the Fifth Ward and East End. Keep up the good work!
• Believe it or not Houston does care about its historic structures (for the most part). Five more buildings were designated as historic landmarks this month.
• Did you know you can recycle your leftover building materials? The City of Houston collects them and donates them. If you are looking for cool, funky and/or historic salvaged materials check out The Salvage Warehouse. They’re an interesting follow on Instagram too.
• Sylvester Turner is back into politics. He won Jackson Lee’s Democratic seat and will be on the ballot this November. Not everyone is a fan but I can get behind prioritizing climate change, housing and infrastructure.
